Simchat Torah

Beth Jacob Synagogue will be the host for the Eastern Connecticut Jewish community in celebration of Simchat Torah on Sunday evening October 20 at 6:30 pm.  This year for the first time ever, Beth Jacob will be joined by our brothers and sisters from Beth El (New London), Emanu-El (Waterford), Ahavath Achim (Colchester), and Bnai Israel (Willimantic).

Would you please let the office know by October 17 whether you will be attending. There is no cost to you as the participating synagogues are picking up the cost – but we need to know to make plans. There will be ‘welcoming’ and other things for which we will need help throughout the evening, and we welcome your assistance. Please see Roz E. or Al R. as they could use assistance.

One of the highlights of the evening will be the opening up of a Torah and unfurling it around our Sanctuary, with every person present having the opportunity to read a favorite verse from the Torah, either in Hebrew or in English – but you have to select it in advance. Perhaps you have a verse from your Bar or Bat Mitzvah Torah portion. Maybe you have a particular story in the Bible and you want to pick out one verse from it.  Or maybe you want to kick the idea around with me.  Pick out a verse and let me know so that he can identify it in the Torah for that evening.

Many of you have told me that you would like to participate in events with larger groups.  Well, this is it! And we get to party with our neighbors throughout the Eastern Connecticut as we sing and dance with our Torahs and each other.

Please put this on your calendar and let’s continue the joys that we will begin with this New Year 5780!
